Representative Jordan lost support in the second vote.
Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio did not secure sufficient votes to become the Speaker of the House in a second ballot. More members of his party who voted for him on the first ballot defected the second time than colleagues who changed their vote to support him.
As the search for a new House Speaker lengthens, certain legislators are beginning to consider giving Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, who is currently speaker pro tempore, the authority to conduct House business on a limited basis. For the present, Representative McHenry has interpreted his job as solely to preside over the election of a new speaker.
Among other items on the agenda, members of the House face a continuing resolution that will expire in a few weeks.
